INTRODUCTION

EARNEST & NUTRIMENTHE International Symposium is an open and dynamic event designed to share updated knowledge on the effects of Early Nutrition Programming on the development of most common illnesses during infancy, childhood, adolescence and adult life.

Updated and original data from the EU-funded FP6 Project EARNEST (www.metabolic-programming.org), (FOOD-CT-2005-007036) will be presented in this meeting for the first time. This project is a large collaborative investigation into the long-term consequences of early nutrition by metabolic programming. It brings together a multi-disciplinary team of scientists from 38 institutions in 16 European countries.

The project will run from 2005 to 2010 and is being coordinated by Professor Koletzko of the Children's Hospital, University of Munich, Germany.

NUTRIMENTHE EU Project is a new EU-funded FP7 (FP7-KBBE-2007-1, ref. nº 212652), entitled: "Effect of diet on the mental performance of children" designed to follow-up most of the major cohorts of children in Europe in order to demonstrate the effect of diet on mental performance and behaviour in children. This project follows up around 120000 children from all over Europe with the participation of 20 partners from 9 countries.

Early nutrition programming will be investigated using an approach that integrates knowledge from randomised controlled trials, prospective observational studies and animal, cellular and molecular techniques. This will enable a better understanding of the extent to which nutritional influences in early life can programme a person's development and metabolism in adulthood.

Other aspects of these projects include studies to investigate consumer attitudes to early nutrition programming and the economic importance of early nutrition programming.

Both projects come under the Food Quality and Safety Priority of the Sixth and Seven Framework Programme for Research and Technical Development of the European Community. The EU is contributing 13.4 million euros towards a total cost of 16.5 million euros for the EARNEST Project and 6 million euros for the NUTRIMENTHE Project.

In addition, leading international experts have been invited to offer new insights into several health-related issues (e.g., nutritional status, gene-environment interactions….) linked to the nutrition of pregnant and breastfeeding women and of infants and children.

Poster sessions will take place at this event and a prize will be awarded to the best poster. Participants:

1. EARNEST and NUTRIMENTHE research groups from Germany, Spain, Hungary, The Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, United Kingdom, Poland, USA.
2. Research experts from all over the world invited as speakers.
3. Active researchers interested in the area even from different international companies.
4. Professionals and Policy makers in the field of Public Health and Consumer Information and Behaviour.

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

On behalf of the Early Nutrition Academy (ENA), the European Union, the Local Organizing Committee and the Scientific Committee, we invite you to come to Granada (Spain) on April 23 2008. It is a privilege for us to host the EARNEST and NUTRIMENTHE Community and all of the people involved in the Early Nutrition Programming Research.

The title of the Meeting is: "Demonstrating Early Programming in Humans and Animal Models". Granada is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and offers a wide range of cultural, historical, and gastronomic experiences.

The Scientific Programme was planned to present the recent developments in Early Nutrition and Metabolic Programming and long term consequences of this approach.

We are looking forward to seeing you in Granada next April 2008!
